Since 1953, Hickey Funeral Home has been serving the families of Monticello and Wayne County. In 1953, visitations lasted for days – not an evening only; they were in the family home – not in the funeral home. The funeral service was held in the church – not the funeral chapel. We passed out fans – not turned down the air conditioning. The men of the community – not a backhoe – dug the grave. Hickey Funeral Home has progressed with the time… today's funeral services are personalized to meet the individual requirements of each family. We take great pride in providing every family with the service that reflects their needs: spiritually, emotionally and financially.

In the early 1970's, at the age of thirty-five, Marvin Hicks made a life-changing decision. His wife took over the daily operation of their florist business, when he moved to Louisville, Kentucky to attend the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science, and to complete his personal goal of becoming a funeral director and embalmer. Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home, Inc. became a reality in 1972, when Marvin Hicks and his wife, Mary Ann Smith Hicks, opened their home to the public. Situated on North Highway 90 in Wayne County, just on the outskirts of the city of Monticello, the funeral home became an entity in a large, two-story antebellum-type Southern Home. In 1976, the funeral home was relocated to its present location at 647 North Main Street. This large, three story late nineteenth century home provided spacious rooms and elaborate antique architecture that created the comfortable, caring atmosphere that Marvin and Mary Ann Hicks wanted to provide for each family that requested their services. In 2008 the family started moving toward a new phase in the longevity of the company. This led to one of the long-term employees and funeral directors, Anthony Vaughn, purchasing the business. Today the company is managed by Anthony & wife Kami and their devoted staff of funeral service professionals. The funeral business and the complexity of family situations is much different than it was in years past. For this reason, it takes a host of people and skills to provide a quality service to our families. We pride ourselves on being able to tailor a dignified service for any family, no matter what their beliefs or financial situation might be.
