In 1906, Letha and Elmer Shepard founded the Shepard Funeral Home in St. Louis, MO. Now, over 100 years later, the Shepard Funeral Chapel is still family owned and operated. We assist families in the St. Louis area with burials and cremations, visitations, memorials and celebrations of life. We are honored to share our history of serving the St. Louis area with you. In 1910, the Shepard Family acquired an additional facility on North Grand at Kossuth, gaining friends and extending their services to another community. After Elmer Shepard passed away in 1929, the second generation of the Shepard family, Merle and Erma joined Letha Shepard in assuming the responsibility of running the funeral homes and carrying on the Shepard tradition. In 1932, the Shepard Funeral Home moved to Hamilton Avenue in the heart of Wellston, a growing area of mid-north St. Louis County, MO. They watched this area grow and prosper during the 1940's and 1950's. Erma and Merle were joined by their son, Merle 'Glen' Shepard, in 1956, during his college years. After graduating from Washington University in 1958, he began working full time with his parents. As the population spread further to the north-northwest area of St. Louis County in the 1960's, so did the Shepard Family. In 1963, they decided to move to our current location at 9255 Natural Bridge Road in town of St. John, MO. In 1980, Erma and Merle's youngest grandson, David Shepard, joined the family business. Though Erma, Merle and Glen retired many years ago, the 100 plus year Shepard legacy continues with David as the honored owner of Shepard Funeral Chapel. He continues on their legacy of ministry to serve the Greater St. Louis area and beyond in caring for those that have lost loved ones. The Shepard ministry team expanded again in October of 2013, with the addition of funeral director, Mitch Wilson from the former Baumann Colonial Chapel in Overland, MO. Shepard's also acquired all of the historical records of the former Baumann Colonial Chapel, Baumann Bros. Funeral Home, Baumann Undertaking and Livery, and Clark Funeral Home. Shepard Funeral Chapel is also honored to be the provider for all prepaid funeral plans that were originally purchased from Baumann Colonial Chapel and Hilleman Funeral Home.
